Anthurium crystallinum × magnificum is a stunning hybrid known for its large, velvety, heart-shaped leaves with striking white veining. Its care is similar to other velvety anthuriums, requiring high humidity, warmth, and well-draining soil. Here’s how to keep it thriving:
Care Guide
1. Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light will slow growth.
East or north-facing windows work well, or use a grow light if needed.
2. Temperature & Humidity
Ideal temperature: 65-80°F (18-27°C). Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.
Needs high humidity (ideally 70%+). Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting to maintain moisture.
3. Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry.
Use filtered or distilled water to avoid mineral buildup, as anthuriums can be sensitive to tap water.
4. Soil
Use a chunky, well-draining mix. A mix of orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and peat moss works well.
Avoid heavy soils that retain too much moisture, as this can cause root rot.
5. Fertilizing
Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20).
Reduce feeding in fall and winter when growth slows.
6. Potting & Repotting
Repot every 1-2 years when roots outgrow the pot or soil becomes compacted.
Choose a pot with good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
7. Propagation
Best propagated through division or stem cuttings with aerial roots.
Let cuttings callous for a few hours before placing them in sphagnum moss or water to root.
8. Common Issues
Yellow leaves → Overwatering or poor drainage. Let soil dry slightly before watering.
Brown edges → Low humidity; increase moisture levels.
Leggy growth → Insufficient light; move to a brighter spot.
Pests → Watch for spider mites, mealybugs, and thrips. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
